Blanco Family Getaway

Blanco Family Getaway

Construction Start, July 2011

The program called for the design of a new Main House with detached garage and an attached but isolated Guest Suite for visitors. The program was outlined for its simplicity and for efficiency.

The Main House is sited between several majestic oak trees and oriented to the gently sloping site accordingly. Each room is oriented for a view to the meadow and sited to take advantage of the prevailing breezes. The open floor plan allows for simple shed roofs to start low to block out the sun and rise upward toward the north. Each of the buildings’ “Big Walls” was used to create individual courtyards between the buildings and to create intimate outdoor spaces.

The Main Entry courtyard is situated between the Guest suites building, Garage building and the Main house building. It is sited to block the cold north winds in the winter while opening up to the south for the breezy summer months. The Master Bedroom courtyard is situated at the end of the Main house and is sited to take advantage of the beautiful views to the oaks and the meadow while still maintaining privacy.

The materials of cedar, rusted steel, D’Hanis brick and corrugated metal were chosen for durability and ease of maintenance. All the buildings were oriented to take advantage of the incredible views as well as the almost year round south-easterly breezes.
